This competition has now ended but please read on to find out about our good friends at The Tomato Stall!

It’s competition time! Our Fair to Nature friends at The Tomato Stall are offering a squirrel ‘hotel’ and £25 to spend on The Tomato Stall products to one lucky winner. But first, here’s a bit about them…

The Tomato Stall - glasshouseTomatoes have been grown on the Isle of Wight for over 30 years, where above average sunlight levels and the reflective qualities of the surrounding sea create an ideal location to grow fantastic tasting tomatoes.

The nursery, which is home to 26 hectares of glasshouses, is located in the rural village of Arreton where farming has been prevalent for centuries due to the fertile soils and sheltered valley. Here The Tomato Stall grows a wide selection of award winning speciality tomatoes.

As a Fair To Nature farm more than 10% of the nursery is given back to natural habitats with specific areas set aside for wild flower meadow planting, ideal for bees and other pollinators, seed crops for wild birds, and housing for a number of species including dormice and barn owls.

Canada Geese on reservoir at Wight Salads webRainwater is harvested from the glasshouse roofs and stored in reservoirs around the site. As well as drastically reducing the water consumption of the business these ponds create wonderful habitats themselves. All plant waste is composted, providing essential nutrient to future organic crops.

Perhaps most notable are the bright eyed and bushy tailed residents, as the Isle of Wight is home to a small but thriving population of red squirrels. Although native to Britain, the red squirrel is an endangered species due to the introduction of their grey cousins in the 1980s. Introducing suitable housing that provides shelter and safety from predators has seen a rise in red squirrel sightings on site.
